The Cottage School Needs our Help
Toolbox, Inc., a (501c3) nonprofit based in Roswell and powered by nearly 90 volunteer retirees, has been teaching elementary and middle school students important Life Skills through their project-based learning curriculums which has them building meaningful projects with their own hands. The curriculums are offered through Toolbox’s ‘Young Apprentice Construction Club’ (YACC), an FCS sponsored program. And, nobody at Toolbox gets paid. The first club was started at Elkins Pointe MS (Kindra Smith, Principal) in 2015. It went so well, the first feeder program started in 2016 at Mimosa (Ariane Holcomb, Principal). In 2021, FCS expressed their desire to have YACC in all 59 elementary schools and all 19 of their middle schools. Today, YACC is active in 8 FSC elementary schools: Mimosa, Hembree Springs, Sweet Apple, Vickery Mill , Esther Jackson, Medlock Bridge, Hillside, and Roswell North, while Alpharetta, Crabapple Crossing, River Eves and Brookview are currently being set up. Elkins Pointe MS is the only MS to have graduated from Toolbox’s YACC program, which happened once they began offering Construction Technology to all of their students full time during the school week. Similarly, Mountain Park ES is the only ES to have graduated from Toolbox’s YACC for the exact same reason.
Most YACC clubs cap out at 20-students and fill up quickly after online enrollment. It’s not uncommon to have 10 or more waitlisted in many schools. Approximately 40% of all Young Apprentices are girls, while attendance is over 90% year over year. And… there is no cost to schools or students, all the while Toolbox will invest $10-$11K into new schools each year.
Recently, administrators from The Cottage School (Roswell) learned of Toolbox and asked them if they would establish a similar after-school program for their middle school students. In short order, and with great enthusiasm, Toolbox committed to developing a pilot program for the first semester of the ’24-’25 school year.
However, the Cottage School cannot have the program unless the school provides, or sources the volunteers necessary to support the Club. All YACC clubs operate this way. Toolbox is requesting that the North Fulton Retired Educators Association, through its membership, provide the volunteers necessary in order to make this program possible for the students at The Cottage School. This pilot will be limited to 10-students and last no longer than 90-minutes once a week on the same day thereof while students build a ‘Perfect Toolbox’ during the semester, as seen in the photo above.
